Information about Paphs from RHS

The orchid register of RHS continues to change the species name etc dependent on the situation corresponded to the information updated day by day. But for the general growers around the world, it is very difficult to have the information updated. Now, the information is and will be supplied from the RHS International Orchid Registrar, Mr. Julian Show. But this is limited in Paphiopedilum only here. I'm very happy to use these information when you register new hybrids to RHS in future.

(5) Paph. viniferum which is mentioned bellow (3), became to identify one of vriety of paph. callosum, Paph. callosum var. viniferum as Dr. P. Cribb described. So, we can not use Paph. viniferum as one of parents for Orchids hybrids registration. But RHS has accepted Paph. Azores Eagle (Paph. callosum x Paph. viniferum) in 05/Aug/2003 already. Consequently, the Group name Azores Eagle applies to the progeny of {callosum} var. {callosum} x {callosum} var. {viniferum}, [or Paph. callosum x Paph. viniferum in the view of some] as described in Orchid Review Supplement 112(1255): 14 (Jan. 2004). It is currently entered as a synonym in the grex register. 041201
(4) Paph. jackii
Paph. jackii is described as Paph. malipoense var. jackii, one of the variety of Paph. malipoense. But the species name, Paph. jackii became to be accepted for registering new hybrids as one of parents. Already, Paph. Wossner Armenijack ( armeniacum x jackii ), Paph. Wossner Pinkjack ( delenatii x jackii ) etc was registered.

(3) Paph. viniferum
Dr. Koopowitz described Paph. viniferum as one grope of vinicolored, distinct from Paph. callosum. Now, the species name of Paph. viniferum is acceptable for registration.

Paph. ang-thong ( Greyi ) → Paph. godefroyae var. ang-thong
Before, we have to used Paph. Greyi for registration when we used Paph. ang-thong as one of parents of hybrids. Now, RHS treated Paph. ang-thong as Paph. godefroyae var. ang-thong. When you register Paph. ang-thong as one of parents, you have to used the species name, Paph. godefroyae.

Orchid Review Supplement Vol. 110 ( 1246 ) : 48( July, 2002 )
Paphiopedilum x ang-thong Fowlie and Paph. Greyi.
Plants originally found on the Ang-thong lslands have a controversial history of identification. being variously ascribed to Paph.godefroyae or a natural hybrid Paph. godefroyae x Paph. niveum. Unfortunately, they have usually been entered in the orchid hybrid register as the artificial grex Paph. Grayi, which is inappropriate even if they are of hybrid derivation as they are of wild, not cultivated, origin. Until shown to be otherwise, plants known as Paph. x ang-thong will be accorded cultivar status in the register as Paph. godefroyae 'Ang-thong' rather than listed as Paph. Grayi, which apparently is not a nomenclatural or biological equivalent. A search of all grexes registered with Paph. Grayi as a parent has revealed that the following grexes are derived from Paph. godefroyae 'Ang-thong'.

' Ang-thong' as a poIIen parent. ' Ang-thong' as a seed parent

Paph. conco-bellatulum → Paph. wenshanense
For Paph. conco-bellatulum in China (In Japan, Paph. Conco-bellatulum), Paph. wenshanense is used for registration because this species name, Paph. wenshanense was described in China.

Paph. stonei var. latifolium → Paph. platyphyllum
Dr. Yukawa described Paph. platyphyllum for Paph. stonei var. latifolium. Now, Paph. platyphyllum is acceptable for registration.

Orchid Review Supplement Vol. 110 ( 1248 ) : 112( Nov. 2002 )
Following a reappraisal of the available information, initiated by Robert-Jan W. Quene of Orchids Limited, Phillip Cribb at the Kew Herbarium has agreed to the recognition of Paphlopedilum platyphyllum for registration.
Therefore the note appearing in Orch. Rev. Suppl. 110: 64 Uuly 2002), should be disregarded. Robert's article on Paph. platyphyllum will be submitted to Orchid Digest in due course. Paph. platyphyllum is known from a small population near the sumlnit of Bukit Kana, an isolated mountain in the Third Division of Sarawak, whereas all collections of Paph. stonei are from tlle First Division. Geographical isolation along with differences in morphology and breeding behaviour have led to the conclusion that this taxon is worthy of recognition at specific rank. Consequently all tile registrations of grexes with Paph. platyphyllum as a parent, that had been registered under Paph. stonei have been amended. A list is given below. The registrar apologises for the inconvenience and confusion so caused. In order to avoid further name changes and confusion, please note that acceptance of the grex epithets listed bellow final and will not be supplanted by re-applications for registration of the same grex parentage under a different name that may have been submitted and rejected in the past at an earlier date than that given below.

Paph. parishii var. daianthum → Paph. daianthum
Paph. daianthum is acceptable for RHS registration. This species was treated as distinct from Paph. parishii from July, 1999.
Paph. chamberainianum → Paph. victoria-regina
From ' Paphiopedilum ' by Dr. P. Cribb, Paph. chamberlainiaum was treated as synonym of Paph. victoria-regina. When you register new hybrids using paph. chamberainianum as one of the parents, you have to use the species name of Paph. victoria-regina instead of Paph. chamberlainiaum.
Paph. wentworthianum
1986年から、The species name of Paph. wentworthianum is acceptable for registration instead of Paph. violascens from 1986.
Paph. curtisii → Paph. superbiens var. curtisii
Paph. curtisii must be treated as a variety of Paph. superbiens. Paph. curtisii has changed to Paph. superbiens from 1984. Earlier crosses from Paph. curtisii continue in the record.
