REGISTRARユS NOTES

Implementation of GO 4
The nightmare for the registration staff continues, and presents particular problems for those using the on-line version of the register. As a useful hint, most (but not all) greges previously listed under Brassolaeliocattleya are now Rhynchosophrocattleya and most Potinara will now be found under Rhynchosophrocattleya or Thwaitesara. Alternatively one can search for a grex using the grex epithet only and leaving the genus box blank.
The following new hybrid genera are here validated:

Nomenclatural adjustments in Habenaria and Pecteilis.
Habenaria erichmichaelii
described by Eric Christenson in Orchids (AOS) [72(2)]: 136, Feb. 2003, was named for Erich E. Michel of Hoosier Orchids, and consequently the orthography needs to be corrected in databases to Habenaria erichmichelii Christenson. The Kew World Monocots Checklist (WMCL) has now been changed to agree with this.

The plant collector Carl Roebelen (b. 1855, Geisslingen, Germany; d. 6 Jan 1927, Northern Thailand), was employed for a short time by Sander, from spring 1880-1882, before working freelance. He collected from 1880-1883? in the Philippines, then after 1884 in Borneo, Sumatra, Java and other smaller islands, and finally from about 1886 in Burma (Myanmar) and Indo-China including Vietnam. After being interned in India during the First World War he returned to Thailand in 1924. Roeblelen is commemorated by several plant names including Habenaria roebelenii Rolfe in Orchid Review 21(241): 39, 1913. At time of writing this epithet appears in some publications, including WMCL, as メroebleniiモ, apparently an unintentional orthographic error. Curiously it appears to be omitted from both editions of the useful orchid checklist by L.V. Averyanov, Vascular plants synopsis of Vietnamese flora 1, 1990, and Updated checklist of the orchids of Vietnam, 2003.
There are several other plants named for Carl Roebelen, Aerides roebelenii Rchb.f., Gard. Chron. 21: 510, 1884, and Cypripedium roebelenii Rchb.f., Gard. Chron. 1883(2): 684, now a synonym of Paphiopedilum philippinense. Better known is the date palm relative Pheonix roebelenii OユBrien, Gard. Chron. 1889(2): 475, 758, f.68. This currently appears in some publications, including IPNI, as メroebeliniiモ, but the recent generic review by Sasha Barrow, Kew Bulletin 53(3): 530, 1998, uses roebelenii.
A recent review of Pecteilis by C.S. Kumar, in Nordic Journal of Botany vol. 22 (2002, publ. 2003) reduces Pecteilis sagarikii Seidenf., Bot. Tidsskr., 68: 46, 1973 to a synonym of Pecteilis hawkesiana (King & Pantl.) C.S. Kumar, syn. Habenaria hawkesiana King & Pantl, 1897; Platanthera hawkesiana (King & Pantl.) Kraenzl., 1899. This has required a change of grex parentage in the register.

Cynorkis Kewensis grex
There are several errors that have come to light surrounding the identity of the pollen parent of this early orchid hybrid, which was first published in The Orchid Review 1903: 219. In Kew Bull. Misc. Info. 1904(App. 3): 68 and Rolfe & Hurst, The Orchid Studbook 1909: 72, the pollen parent appears as Cynorkis purpurata. This is evidently an error for Cynorkis purpurascens Thouars, 1822. Recent revisionary work on Cynorkis by Johan Hermans, has also revealed an error in identification. It appears that the actual plant used as the pollen parent of this cross at Kew was Cynorkis calanthoides Kraenzlin, which has for some time been treated as a synonym of Cynorkis purpurascens, but is now recognised as an earlier name for the species that has been known as Cynorkis uncinata Perrier.
According to the ICNCP At. 3.6 &3.7, when a parent of a grex is changed the parentage is to be re-stated, rather than a new grex being created for the new hybrid combination. Consequently the parentage is re-stated here. Cynorkis Kewensis gx = Cyn. lowiana x Cyn. calanthoides. For further details and illustrations see Orchid Review 115(1277): 253-255 (Sept. 2007).

Validation of names in Stenoglottis Lindl.
For some 30 years Joyce Stewart has cultivated a white flowered form of Stenoglottis woodii Schltr., which she collected on 21st October 1976 from the wild in South Africa, Kwa-Zulu Natal, about 1.5 miles from Port Edward on the Inzingolweni Road, the farm Beacon Hill, growing on rock ledges on a kopje. Since it is of wild origin a botanical epithet is here provided.
Stenoglottis woodii Schltr. forma galantha J.M.H.Shaw f. nov. A forma typica sed floribus albis differt. Holotypus: Stewart 1810 (WSY).
As cultivated in the UK, the plant flowers in August-September. The plant may be distinguished from Stenoglottis woodii f. woodii by its milk-white flowers. Some newly opened flowers have a few purple spots on the labellum which soon fade away.

Another plant which was recently used as the parent of the registered grex Stenoglottis Mission in Motion (J. Truter, 2007) is also without a valid name. It has been known by the provisional name Stenoglottis メmolweniensisモ G. McDonald in South African Orchid Journal 26(4): 117 (1996), which name is here validated. The epithet refers to the Molweni River valley where the plant may be found growing on soil banks on the edge of sheer cliffs.
Stenoglottis molweniensis J.M.H.Shaw ex G. McDonald sp. nov. S. woodii Schltr. affinis, sed labello ecalcarato; lobulis lateralibus fimbriatis irregulatim notabilis. S. longifoliae Hook. primo adspectu maxime simile, sed foliis integris, non undulatis; labello lobulis lateralibus fimbriatis brevioribus. Holotypus: Stewart 2275 (WSY), collected by a student of Joyce Stewartユs from an unknown locality inland from Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, prior to May 1982. The holotype has been prepared from cultivated material.
The suggestion is made by J. Stewart (The Kew Magazine, 6(1):11, 1989) that this plant may represent the hybrid S. woodii x S. longifolia, which seems a reasonable assumption given its intermediate characters. However, G. McDonald (l.c. 1996) thinks this is unlikely since he has found substantial populations at a number at disjunct sites along the Molweni River valley, with uniform floral morphology. J. Truter (pers. Com.) has also found it at other localities in Natal. This suggests that if it is a hybrid it is not of very recent origin. The artificial hybrid S. woodii x S. longifolia has been made by several hybridists including J. Truter in South Africa and S. Walter in USA who registered it as Longwood grex in October 2000. He described the resulting flowers as ヤmainly white, 11 mm high by 7 mm wide, similar in form to flowers of the pod parent (S. woodii), though with more pink spotting, especially on the lip.ユ A colour slide exists in the collection at WSY, which has not yet been seen.
Joyce Stewart still maintains the type clone in cultivation and it flowers every year in UK in September. (S. longifolia does not usually flower in the UK until October-November).
The registrar would like to express his gratitude to Joyce Stewart for providing the type specimens and sharing her wide knowledge of the plants.
