Paph. malipoense

@Paph. malipoense was discovered in 1947 but it was not recorded. In 1984, Mr. S.C.Chen and Tsi recorded officially in Chinese journal. Paph. malipoense is distributed in the southest area of Guizhou Plateau and around Malipo, Hwang@and Jin where is about 1300~1600 m sea level. In the area, there many typical mountains , they call San Kau, that is similar to a bamboo shoot of lime stone. They like the lower mountains where the smaller trees and bamboo grow well on the terrace because the wind is not so strong. Paph. malipoense grows on the terrace faced to east and root in a crevice and a depression where is occupied by leaf mold and sand of lime stone. The crevice will be a stream when it rain. The plant is covered by bush and never get the direct sun shine. Sometimes, the early morning sun shine will reach to the plants directly. But the area is bright by the reflected sun light. In March, the monsoon from south or south east brings moisture and rain so much. In summer, it will be fine but they have thunder frequently. In summer, it is 30 Ž in the Max. tem. and 20~25 Ž in the Min. tem. On the other hand, in October, the north west monsoon brings cold but it continue to be fine. When it is fine, the Max. tem. is 22 Ž and the Min. tem. is about 5 Ž. In winter , it is not rain. So Paph. malipoense get water from the moisture from the poor soil. The flower will come from December to April.
Brief cultivation of Paph. armeniacum
@Paph. malipoense like water but be careful not to water too much. In winter, don't water too much and keep the compost wet slightly. They like shade but like morning sun shine. For their compost, they grow in sphagnum moss . But the mix compost whose part of wood like bark is about 50 % will be acceptable. The Min. tem. in winter is 12 ~ 15 Ž. We mind that they will rest in winter. It will take about 3 months from bud to flower and don't change the environment in this period like temperature and sun shine.

Paph. malipoense dislike crypt-moss, I guess. So I recommend to use mix compost. In the growing period from spring , they need a lot of water and dry in winter. To dry means keeping wet slightly.

Paph. emersonii

@Paph. emersonii is the new species in subgenus Parvisepalum , discovered from Yunnan pro. in China and recorded by Dr. H. Koopowitz and P. Cribb in 1986. It distributed around the border between Yunnan and Guangxi Province along Guizhou Plateau. It grows about 600 m from sea level and along the river valley where are small mountains of 150 m height. They like the middle area of the mountains and terrace . On the terrace, the stream of rain brings sand and mad on it and build up barrier with moss. Paph. emersonii grows on the barrier like this. The barrier never dry up in a year. It means they like water so much. their root expand into the mad. The terrace faces to south but Paph. emersonii grow the area of the barrier faced to north west. And they like the morning sun shine. In the day time, the sun shine does not reach directly by the bush. But it is very bright by the reflected sun light.
@In this area, it is rainy season from May to October. On the other hand, it is dry season from December to February. In the dry season, the Max. tem. is 22~25 Ž and the Min. tem. is 5 Ž. In January, the north monsoon is very cold. But Paph. emersonii need the cold to secret hormone for flowering in spring, the scientists say. In February and March, the climate will change drastically. The monsoon containing high humidity come from southwest. In the morning and evening, the dense frog covered these area and the mist and light rain give moisture to the plants. In this season, the Max. tem. is 14~16 Ž and the Min. te, is 8 Ž. In summer, it rains very much. When it is fine, the Max. tem. is 28 Ž and the Min. tem. is 22 Ž. Dr. Fowlie make 3 varieties dependent on the different distribution as follows.
(1) Paph. emersonii var. kwang-nanensis
@This variety distribute around Kwang Nan, the southwest of Yunnan Pro. The flower is the bigger and round good shape. This variety is the best for the value of appreciation. The purple red color on the base of Petal and the line on staminode is vivid.
(2) Paph. emersonii var. guangxiensis
@This variety distribute in the northwest of Guangxi and in the to west of Guizhou Plateau. The petal width is not so wide as the upper variety. The purple red color on the base of petal is tiny spots and the same color of staminode is like line or nets.
(3) Paph. emersonii var. angustipetalum
@They grow in the west of Yun Kai dah san and around Yang chun. The specificity is that Petal bend backward and that there is not clear purple red color on the base of Petal.
Brief cultivation of Paph. emersonii
@They like water very much. Never dry up their compost. But for growing in the pot, we have to keep the compost to be easy for water through and never to stagnate the water in pot. They like shade well but like the morning sun light. …For the compost, we can use sphagnum moss. But it is much easier to use mix compost whose parts of wood is bigger than usual. About 50 % is recommend for wood like bark. @Of course, we can use the mix compost made up by stone only. But it will be very difficult to water, especially for the beginners. It goes down to 5 Ž in nature, we had better keep the pot upper 10 Ž in the green house. I recommend it is kept at 12 ~ 15 Ž for the Min. tem for growing plants. In summer, they don't like too hot. The shade of 50~70 % will be needed and I recommend to grow them outside where they can get good wind. They like fertilize basically. But too much fertilizer is no good as you like. Be careful for the fertilizer. I recommend you to use the liquid type fertilizer in more 4 or 5 times dilution than the regular dilution instead of the solid type fertilizer. And The best season for fertilizer is in spring and fall. In summer is no good because it is too hot and they are pooped.

For growing Paph. emersonii does not like crypt-moss and you had better use the mix compost . As they like water so much like Paph. armeniacum, never dry up the compost in winter. In truth, this procedure will be very difficult for your practice, I guess. Consider about your habit and decide which compost is the best for you. In my case, I give water too much in my own habit. The plants i the right photo, it must be the result to much water. But they grow .... But I can see the flower every 2 years only.
