The newly discovered Paphiopedilum

@ From the south area in China, the species was discovered newly and recorded as the species name, Paph. chaoi by Mr. Hu Song Hua (Guangzhou Flower Research Center in China) in Die Orchidee, 50(5): 495; 1999) as follows. This informationed was presented from Mr. Olaf Grus who is a friend of mine in Germany. Thank you Olaf.

Paph. chaoi

@The new species of Paphiopedilum chaoi was found by author in CHAOs Orchid Garden at Aug. 1998, where come from Na-po County of Guangxi province in China. The flower of the new species are yellow-brown with deep purple macula-streaks in the lip and with brown macula-streaks in petals. The staminode round with three dentatus at apex differs from Paphiopedilum henryanum and Paphiopedilum herrmannii.

Diagnosis: Species hec Paphiopedilum henryanum BRAEM and Paphiopedilum herrmannii FUCHS et REISINGER similis, sed petalums aureis-brown mixtis brown maculatus vittatus and lip purpurascens mixtis deep purpureus maculatus vittatus, staminode round et three dentatus at apice differt.

Paph. chaoi

Describe: Terrestrial or lithophytic herbs. Leaves 2 ~3 linear, strip-shaped, green with purple spotted at base, 8 ~8 cm long and 1.5 ~2.3 cm wide. Inflorescence nearly erected, up to 15 cm with one-flowered. Flower is 6 cm high and 8 cm wide. Floral bract elongate, ovoid 3.5 cm long and 1.8 cm wide. The dorsal sepal rhomb-shape, up to 4 cm wide and 3 cm high, Yellow-brown. The synsepal elongate, ovoid 3.5 cm wide and 1.6 cm high, yellow-brown. The petals elongate, narrowly elliptic, 4.5 cm long and 1.2 cm wide, yellow-brown with brown macula-streaks. The lip saccate, ovate, up to 3 cm high and 2 cm wide, purplish with deep purple macula streaks. The staminode round, three dentates in the apex.
Etymology: Paphiopedilum chaoi is named for the collector of the new species, CHAO Mu-Hua, who found some newly Orchids of China.
