Q:Dear Toshi, How are you ? Here is my Paphiopedilum which I hope you can identify so that I can take care of it property. Unfortunately, I don't know where it actually came from, I haven't seen the person a who sold the orchid to me at the market. |
I bought it at the local Farmer's market
which is held every Saturday outside a shopping complex here.
There are only a few stalls mostly selling vegetables and food
made by the farmers wives. That was the one time I saw anyone
selling orchids there. That was the only Paph. he sold. He also
had a grammatophylum, some Vandas, a Bulbophylum and another
orchid I can not identify. I hope to go back to the market this
weekend and see if he is there again. There are other markets
in Kota Kinabalu that do sell orchids, but I haven't seen anyone
else sell Paphs. There are very few terrestrial orchids being
sold too. Most people sell Dendrobium, Oncidium, Cattleyas and
vandas. Liza Mahjhrin |
A:Hi Liza ! In truth, this is very difficult problem. First of all, I want to propose this is Paph. virens that was distributed commonly around Mt. Kinabaru. The results is settle down at the most usual one. At the first time , I thought it might be Paph. purpurascens that was recorded by Dr. J. A. Fowlie on the Orchid Digest , Vol. 38, NO.4, 1974. These species are very similar each other. |
|
In this area, the species like this type is Paph. virens mainly. Some botanists says Paph. virens is variety of Pap. javanicum and RHS is not accept Paph. virens. Further more, there are 2 natural species, Paph. petri and burbedgei. Unfortunately, we can not see the original plants any more and the plants we see recently might be different from the ones that they were talking about. Paph. burbegei is said that it is the synonym of Paph. dayanum because whose flower is smaller but is very similar to Paph. dayanum's or the natural hybrids between Paph. dayanum and pap. virens. |

On the other hand, Paph. petri is also the natural hybrids between Paph. virens and Paph. dayanum or Paph. purpurascens. Dr. Fowlie says the difference between Paph. virens and Paph. purpurascens as follows. 1) Paph. virens is almost unvariegated foliage; more finely and less profusely spotted petals, which are extended outwards at right angles and not as in Paph. purpurascens ; very much more conical pouch , and quite different incisurage of the staminode. |

Paph. purpurascens that was recorded by Dr. J. A. Fowlie on the Orchid Digest , Vol. 38, NO.4, 1974. This photo is also described on the issue, the Orchid Digest. |
The photo of Paph. purpurascens that I have. As you know, there is a big difference in the individual properties. |
These species are distributed around Mt. Kinabaru in the north of Borneo Island, Malaysia. This map was discribed on the same issue of the Orchid Digest as above. |
