Paphiopedilums in Viet Nam (No.3)

(8)@PaphDhenryanum

I have never seen the plants. Some member in JAVECO Lab. told me that there is Paph. henryanum in Viet Nam. I want to see the plant and flower if it is true. I asked to look for the news about Paph. henryanum to them.

This species of Paph. SP is very similar to Paph. henryanum but is not identified. Is This Paph. henryanum in Viet Nam? We have to wait the more information of flower from Viet Nam in near future.
Similarity between Paph. sp and henryanum.
iPjThe size and appearance. And they are similar to Paph. esqulorei in Viet Nam.
iQjFrom the traces of flower, this species flower very easily like henryanum. Paph. esqurolei is not so often.
Differences
The purple red mark on the base of leaves is different between them ( see bellow ).

The base of Paph. sp. They have remarkable purple red mark of fine spots on the base. The base of Paph. henryanum in China. They have purple red mark but not spots. The base of Paph. esqurolei. They have green color of base.
We have identified Paph. henryanum as the following. But the plant is different from the plants of upper Photos. What kinds of Paph. is the plants of upper Photos ? When I see the flower in Viet Nam, I'll let you know immediately.

The plant of Paph. henryanum were collected in the mixed in Paph. helenae in truth. But we can not identify them because the feature of the plants are very different from Paph. henryanum in China. The plant in Viet Nam is very small like Paph. burbigerum in China.

A lot of Paph. henryanum that are growing in JAVECO farm. The size of plant is very small. When I was introduced these are Paph. henryanum, I could not believe. I have never seen the flower of this in truth. But the photo of them is exactly Paph. henryanum. They took this picture of flower in their farm. The flower came from the plants that you can see left side of this photo.

(9) Paph. villosum

(10) Paph. gratrixianum

This species distribute in center and south Viet Nam widely. But the size of flower and plant is bigger than that in other countries. And the color of flower is bright greenish yellow. They may be another variety. I don't know the classification in detail. This species is common one in the north of Viet Nam. Some plants have mottled leaves. But I have never seen the flower of the plants.

(11) Paph. affine

Paph. affine grow in the near mountains from Da Lat, the south middle area in Viet Nam. The leaf is very similar to Paph. villosum. The reason why I used the species name, Paph. affine, we used to use this name in Japan. But the flower of the original plant is different from this flower. There is purple color spots on dorsal sepal of the original. But this flower don't have and this have lines instead of spots. I doubt this plant is Paph. affine. If you ask me what this is, I have to answer I have no idea.

(12) Paph. esqurolei

This is very common species in Viet Nam. But in the north, there is the similar species of about half size of leaves. As I have never seen the flowers, I can not talk about them in detail. I want to have the good chance to see the flowers in Ha Noi, the next time.

(13) Paph. hainanense

I put the name of this plants , Paph. hainanense. Because the length of stem is shorter and the color of flower is darker. Nobody find Paph walterianum of the same sub genus, supasopetalum.

(13-2)

@ Paph. cerveranum (New Species)

This speiceis was reported by Dr. Braem in Orchidees, Culture et protection No. 38, 1999. He says as follows. this species not a new plant to cultivation. It has, however, been misinterpreted as Paph. robinsonii by most authors. But the plant under consideration has some differences in the staminode exactly. Although most author is an undescribed taxonomic entity, Cribb considers it to be a possible hybrid between Paph. bullenianum and ' another species , possibly Paph. hookerae without, however, giving any data supporting such hypothesis. @@
This species is a perennial herb, growing epiphytically on the ground or on rocks in leaf-mould. The leaves of plants is 10 ~25 cm long and 4 cm wide with distinctly tessellate, deep green with irregular silvery green or grayish green areas. The inflorescence is up to about 30 cm high , usually bearing a single, up to 9cm wide and 6.5 cm high flower. The saccate lip is inverted helmet shaped , 2.5 ~ 3.5 cm high and about 1.8 cm wide, dull green to honey-brown with purple to purple-brown rim around the aperture, the tip of a paler color, with a network of greenish veins.

And especially, The staminode is completely different from the other similar species like appletonianum, bulleniamum or hainanensis. The staminode has no incision at the lower end but a protruding tooth.
The habitat is in Indochina. Plants were collected in Viet Nam , near the border to Cambodia at attitude of 800 to 900 m.
@@@Some extracts from the description by Dr. G.J. Braem

Surely, I have checked one species in Supasopetalum like this species in the middle area of Viet Nam as Averyanov said. But I put the name , Paph. hainanense to this species as a horticultural meaning. @But I recognized there are many individual difference in this species and some of them are so strange like a natural hybrids with another species. ( by T. Tanaka )

(14-1) Paph. callosum @v.

vitnumense

The shape of Paph callosum in Viet Nam is very similar to Paph. callosum v. thailandense. But The flower is powerful and there are heavy remarkable spots on petal. So, I named this species Paph callosum v. vietnumense. From the hobbyist in Ho Chi Minh City, the album type of this species is only one ( Photo ), now.

(14-2) Paph. callosum @iTypical variety j

@I don't know the distribution in detail of these different varieties of callosum. But they have the typical callosum like photo. For the first time, they said they have Paph. barbatum. When we saw the photo of them, we identified it the typical callosum. .

There are big differences in size and shape of flower and warts on petal between the both varieties. Also they said there are much darker clones in Viet Nam. It might not be dream to find the vinicolor type in Viet Nam

About the comments and local distribution of each species will be reported in near future. Please wait for a while.
