In 2005 the National China Flower Expo was held in Chengdu, Sichuan in the last week of September. In addition to the general flower expositions a special exhibition for orchids, named 'Excellent Orchid' was set up in a separated show hall. Usually orchid exhibitions in China are nearly exclusively devoted to Oriental cymbidiums, but on the National China Flower Expo the traditional cymbidiums played only a minor role while the so-called western orchids, i.e. phalaenopsis, cattleyas, big-flowered cymbidiums, oncidiums, etc. provided the main body of the show, with paphiopedilums being present in small numbers too. With the increasing wealth of the
country the interest in these types of orchids is constantly growing and slowly an orchid scene outside of the traditional cymbidium circles is developing. The orchid exhibition was mainly focused on a professional audience from the horticultural industry to introduce national and international producers.

At the pre-opening evening a panel of national Chinese orchidists went through the exhibition for judging plants. Flowering sized hybrid orchids and
flasks exhibited in a massive stand.

Phalaenopsis hybrids. Such an aesthetic staging of orchids is still rare in Chinese exhibitions where table presentations dominate. Thai orchid producers also contributed to the show.

Paphiopedilum callosum and Maudiae-types. Presentation of a local producer specialized in slipper orchids.

Native southwest Chinese Paph. charlesworthii. Chinese paphiopedilums and South American phragmipediums (Phrag. longifolium and Phrag. pearcei).
